Scribbook Review 2026: The French Free Writing Studio, Explained
Scribbook is a French-language writing studio, browser-based and usable offline, whose free plan is enough to write an entire novel: scenes and chapters, structure templates, custom character sheets, goals and statistics. Premium costs 5.99 euros a month or 59.99 euros a year as of September 23, 2026, and mainly adds a beta grammar checker, more storage and backup to Dropbox or Google Drive. What is missing: an outline tool and a timeline still "in development", and no pacing or continuity analysis. The interface is in French only, which settles the question for most English-speaking writers. Existing reviews date from 2018 to 2020 or come from competitors; this one answers five questions, as of today.
Is Scribbook really free?
Yes, with no asterisk. As of September 23, 2026, the free account gives you drag-and-drop scenes and chapters, writing templates (the Snowflake method, the Hero's Journey), an outline made of cards, the character sheet module, a challenge mode, goals and a metrics dashboard by day, month and year. The publisher is Jokamax, a small French company, and the Premium page claims more than 7,000 user accounts.
The only visible constraint on the free plan is storage, 5 MB against 25 MB on Premium. For text, 5 MB is several novels; avatars and images are what eat it.
The challenge mode deserves a mention. You set a goal (say 1,500 words a day for three weeks), and the dashboard shows you every evening where you stand. Nothing new, but it is free, and it is what many writers working in a word processor never get.
How good is the character sheet module?
It is the centrepiece. Scribbook does not hand you a fixed sheet: it hands you a form builder. You pick your fields, save your template, share it if you like, and every sheet links to the scenes where the character appears. A generator helps fill the blanks.
Here is a template built in ten minutes for a fictional novel, "The House of Tides":

The "Linked scenes" field fills itself when you attach the sheet to a scene. That is the kind of link that makes a sheet useful while you write instead of sleeping in a PDF, a principle covered in the character profile template that talks back. Location sheets could not be verified.
Does offline mode work?
Scribbook announces that everything is "also usable offline", and Vita Nuova, which tested it in July 2026 (as a competitor, which it discloses), confirms a real offline mode. Few browser studios manage that. A mobile companion is "in development", so there is no native app today, but the site runs in a phone browser.
What is missing?
Three things, of unequal weight.
The outline and the timeline. Both are listed as "in development". You get templates and cards, not a dedicated chronology. For a novel set in two eras, you will improvise.
Text analysis. The checker (Premium, beta) handles spelling, grammar and some style. It does not measure the pace of a chapter and will not notice that Anselme had grey eyes in chapter 4 and blue eyes in chapter 15. Scribbook accepts Antidote through a browser extension, which covers pure correction, not continuity.
Beta reading. A beta-reading space is announced, not shipped. No collaboration.
Import and export formats could not be verified on the pages consulted: test the export with one chapter before you move your manuscript in.

At 59.99 euros a year, it is the cheapest subscription in the French-language landscape. WriteControl, the other French studio, asks 12.90 euros a month for its Premium, with generative AI and print-ready exports in return; the details are in the WriteControl review. What Sagoræ does not do either
An honest review has to say it: several of Scribbook's gaps are shared by the studio publishing this article. Sagoræ does not write a line for you, by design. It does not replace professional copyediting before you submit to a publisher. It will not tell you whether your novel will sell. And it has no form builder as free as Scribbook's: its character and location sheets have a given shape, tied to the outline, the mind map and the statistics of the novel hub.
Where the two differ is in reading the text. On Sagoræ, the Archivist rereads a chapter against the sheets and flags the eye colour that changed; the AI Proofreader points at the paragraph that stalls. They do not correct, they show. The built-in non-AI checker, for its part, is free and unlimited.
Who Scribbook is for
The French-language writer who wants a free, complete, offline studio and character sheets shaped by hand. Poets too, thanks to the Syllaber syllable counter. Less so anyone who needs a timeline today, or a reading of pace and continuity. And not at all anyone who needs an English interface.
