AI and Copyright: Who Owns a Novel Written With an AI Coach?
A novel written with an AI coach belongs to you in full, because every sentence in the manuscript was written by you: copyright, in the United States as in France, protects the expression of a human author, and a tool that asks questions or flags an inconsistency does not change who did the writing. What is not protected is text produced by a machine. The whole question is therefore which side of that line your manuscript sits on, and whether you can show it. What US copyright law says
The US Copyright Office published guidance in March 2023 on registering works that contain AI-generated material, then in January 2025 the second part of its report "Copyright and Artificial Intelligence", devoted to copyrightability. The position has been stable: a work generated entirely by an AI is not copyrightable; prompts, however detailed, do not make the user an author; using AI as an assistive tool does not prevent protection; and human contributions (selection, arrangement, creative modification) are protected for what they are. In March 2025, the Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit confirmed in Thaler v. Perlmutter that a work needs a human author to be registered.
What that means for a novelist, in three cases:
- Text typed entirely by you, read by a coach or a checker: an original work, protected from the moment it exists, no formality required. The coach is a tool, like a dictionary or a beta reader.
- Text generated by a model and published as is: no human author, no protection. Anyone can take it.
- Text generated, then reworked: the grey zone. Protection covers what you brought (choices, rewriting, structure), not what the machine produced. The thinner your contribution, the thinner the protection, and the burden of showing that contribution is yours.

What French law says
If you publish in France or with a French house, the same line applies under a different vocabulary. The Intellectual Property Code protects "works of the mind" (article L112-1) and grants the right to "the author" (article L111-1). Case law requires a work to be original, meaning it carries "the imprint of its author's personality". That phrase predates AI by decades and already settles the question: a machine has no personality in the legal sense, so a text it produces alone is not a protected work. As of September 23, 2026, the Code contains, to our knowledge, no provision specific to AI-generated text; the general principles apply.
The coached case, precisely
Neither the Copyright Office nor the French Code deals explicitly with the coached case, because it raises no new problem. A coach that asks why your scene opens with the weather is doing what a developmental editor has always done, and nobody has ever argued that the editor was a co-author. Ownership only becomes a question when the tool can write inside your text, which is the line between the software families described in AI-free, AI-generated, AI-coached: the three families.

How to prove the text is yours
Protection needs no formality, but in a dispute (plagiarism, a publisher's challenge, a contest jury's question), it is up to you to show that you are the author. Three means, from the simplest to the most formal.
Version history. In the Sagoræ editor, the Versions panel lets you save a version of a chapter, preview it and restore it. Get into the habit of saving a version at the end of every revision session.

A dated deposit. For evidence you can hold up in court, a deposit with a third party (an authors' organization, a notary, or in the US a registration with the Copyright Office) fixes a certain date. None of these creates the right; they document it. The right itself is born when you write.
Frequently asked questions
Is text written with AI protected by copyright? If you typed it and the AI read, checked or questioned it, yes, entirely. If the model generated it, no, neither in the US nor in France. In between, protection covers your contribution, not the machine's.
Is an AI coach a co-author of my novel? No. It writes nothing; it does the work of a reader or a developmental editor, which the law has never treated as co-authorship.
